What you call “an object lesson”

I’ve never been a particular fan of the “coexist” graphic meme, because most of those who put the bumper stickers on their car or otherwise display it are trying to create some sort of generic equivalence that just isn’t there.  Toleration can indeed be a virtue, but like any other virtue it can be misapplied or rendered in excess.

It’s probably safe to say such tolerance is in excess when one of the highlighted groups steadfastly refuses any semblance of reciprocity:

It was very offensive and local Muslims demanded he take it down.

Four Muslims in Porte Dorée (the Golden door), a ghetto east of Paris, beat artist Combo after he refused to take down his Coexist street art. Combo suffered a dislocated shoulder, bruises and a black eye.

Islamism isn’t about “live and let live.”  It’s about complete social dominance.  And it is about as intolerant of any other viewpoint as a worldview can get.  That is why I say frequently it is incompatible with Western Civilization, which faces a stark choice: submission to such a worldview, or realization that tolerance can only be carried so far.  We haven’t quite reached the point of decadence where individuals are expected to “tolerate” domestic abuse or a criminal holding a gun to their head (though some days I worry we’re getting there).  So why do we allow the radical imams who infest “Londonistan” and other enclaves across Western Europe and the United States to continue spouting their violent, intolerant worldview to whomever will listen?  Justifying this as “free speech” is tantamount to converting the ideals of the First Amendment into a suicide pact.  Diversity of thought and expression, yes.  Tolerance of sedition, treason and violent oppression… um, no.  We cannot claim to be serious about fighting some nebulous “war on terror” when we allow the underlying ideology to be proclaimed across our lands.

If those in government who eagerly seek out any sign of ‘radicalism’ among small-government traditionalists would spend a fraction of that time and energy monitoring and in some cases detaining and expelling TRUE radicals possessed of an alien worldview, we’d all be a lot better off.  But then, that supposes those in power are actually on the side of traditional Western Civilization.  Probably a stretch to assume that these days.

As the saying goes, “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

THIS is how the meme should be presented:
