Food for thought

Drawing upon the wisdom of the past to help illuminate the present.  The God who granted a Great Awakening 300 years ago is no less capable of doing so again today:

“What one generation tolerates, the next generation will embrace.”

“Give me 100 preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God; such alone will shake the gates of hell.”

John Wesley

“If your souls were not immortal, and you in danger of losing them, I would not thus speak unto you; but the love of your souls constrains me to speak: methinks this would constrain me to speak unto you forever.”

“If you are going to walk with Jesus Christ, you are going to be opposed … In our days, to be a true Christian is really to become a scandal.”

George Whitfield

  ***

“Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will.”

“Seek not to grow in knowledge chiefly for the sake of applause, and to enable you to dispute with others; but seek it for the benefit of your souls.”

“Spiritual pride tends to speak of other persons’ sins with bitterness or with laughter and levity and an air of contempt. But pure Christian humility rather tends either to be silent about these problems or to speak of them with grief and pity. (emphasis added)  Spiritual pride is very apt to suspect others, but a humble Christian is most guarded about himself.”

Jonathan Edwards
